DVT Ultrasound

A DVT (Deep Vein Thrombosis) occurs when a blood clot forms in one of the deep veins, usually in the leg. It can cause pain, swelling, and other serious complications if untreated.
Our specialist ultrasound uses Doppler imaging to assess blood flow in your veins and identify any blockages or clots in real-time.

Your Ultrasound Checks For:

  • Presence and location of venous blood clots
  • Swelling or blockage in the deep veins
  • Signs of inflammation or infection
  • Blood flow changes using Doppler technology
  • Early detection of venous thrombosis or insufficiency
  • Assessment of arm or leg vein integrity

This scan helps confirm or exclude DVT — offering vital insight for immediate clinical management.

Frequently Asked Questions

A DVT ultrasound (also known as a venous Doppler scan) uses high-frequency sound waves to assess blood flow in your veins and detect the presence of clots. It’s the most accurate, non-invasive method for diagnosing Deep Vein Thrombosis.

You may experience:

  • Swelling in one leg (occasionally both)
  • Pain, cramping, or heaviness in the calf or thigh
  • Red or darkened skin
  • Warmth over the affected area
  • Prominent, tender veins

If left untreated, a clot can travel to the lungs (pulmonary embolism), which is a medical emergency.

Risk factors include:

  • Immobility (long flights, post-surgery recovery)
  • Recent surgery or injury
  • Cancer or cancer treatment
  • Family history of DVT
  • Blood disorders
  • Pregnancy
  • Obesity or smoking
  • Hormone therapy or oral contraceptives

You will lie comfortably while gel is applied to your leg or arm.
The specialist uses a handheld ultrasound probe to examine your veins, applying gentle pressure to assess vein compressibility and blood flow using Doppler imaging.
The scan takes 20–30 minutes and is completely painless.

No special preparation is needed.
Wear loose, comfortable clothing to allow access to the area being scanned.

None. Diagnostic ultrasound is completely safe — it uses sound waves, not radiation.

Your specialist will discuss your results straight away.
If a clot is found, you’ll receive immediate guidance and, if necessary, a referral for urgent treatment.
If your scan is clear, you’ll leave with peace of mind and a written report.

If you experience sudden pain, swelling, or warmth in one leg or arm, seek medical advice immediately. Early scanning significantly reduces the risk of complications.
